Brisbane and Uber: Let’s Get Started

Following on from our guide for Uber drivers new to Brisbane, we thought we’d cover some of the essentials needed for you to get started quickly.

Driving for Uber in Brisbane is a smart move, as it’s a rapidly growing city. In fact, as of 2018 Brisbane was ranked alongside Sydney and Melbourne as having the fastest growing population and development in Australia. A lot of people are moving to Brisbane, and that means an increasing number of people who need Uber.

But like many professions in the gig economy, there’s red tape that you need to get through to ensure that when you get started, you succeed.

Be licensed in Queensland

Before you can think of driving an Uber car, or driving an Uber car rental in Brisbane, you will need to be over the age of 21 and have been driving on a non-provisional, full Queensland driver’s license for at least 12 months.

So: are you over 21 and have you been driving on an open Queensland driver’s license for at least 12 months? Read on.

Be insured

Brisbane may be a more relaxed town compared with Sydney or Melbourne, but there are silly drivers (and passengers) in all cities.

And there are some exceptionally silly drivers and passengers when you’re driving around Fortitude Valley at two o’clock in the morning.

This is a polite way of saying that you will have to be rideshare-insured if you want to drive an Uber car or drive one of the available Uber car rentals in Brisbane.

At minimum, you will need to have both Compulsory Third Party (CTP) and Third Party Property (TPP) insurance.

Renting your Uber car from Keyz takes the headache out of this step, as all of our Uber car rentals for Brisbane drivers are already covered by insurance entirely suited to rideshare drivers.

Be authorised to drive for Uber in Brisbane

In addition to being licensed to drive in Queensland and insured for Brisbane rideshare conditions, you will also need to be formally authorised to take fares as a Brisbane driver.

Brisbane rideshare drivers are required to have a Booked Hire Driver’s Authorisation, completed a driver safety course, a certificate of inspection, and, finally, have a Booked Hire Service License.

Booked Hire Driver’s Authorisation (DA)

Here’s what you have to do to obtain a Booked Hire Driver’s Authorisation:

Safety Course

Following approval of your Driver’s Authorisation (DA), you will then need to take a driver safety short course.

You can access it here.

Certificate of Inspection (COI)

To drive your Uber car or Uber car rental in and around Brisbane, it needs to have passed a certificate of inspection.

This is to ensure that it is not only safe for your and your passengers, but also that it meets the quality standards put forth by rideshare companies such as Uber.

Choosing an Uber car rental in Brisbane from Keyz means that your vehicle has already been inspected and approved for rideshare services.

Booked Hire Service License

One of the last hurdles between you and Brisbane Uber adventures is a Booked Hire Service License. This is a detailed process, and you can read through the steps and prerequisites here.

Before you can apply for this license, you will need to have a Certificate of Inspection (COI) for your vehicle.

Renting a Brisbane Uber car from Keyz takes some of the pain out of this process, as all of our vehicles have been inspected.

Secure a rideshare-ready or Uber-ready vehicle

Have you satisfied all of the above requirements? Awesome. Services like Ola, DiDi, and Uber also have specific vehicle requirements in terms of makes and models.

You may be licensed, insured, authorised, and inspected, but it could be that your vehicle is too old by a matter of months, or it could be that your make of vehicle is outside of the specified range.

It’s all good, though, because you can rent a car for your Ubering or rideshare work that is sufficiently new and the correct make.

Keyz provides a diverse range of affordable rental vehicles that have been curated to satisfy the requirements of UberX, UberXL, and UberPremium.
