Step 1: Find out whether you’re eligible

To become an Uber partner in Brisbane, you must be at least 21 years of age, hold a full Australian licence and have held it for at least 12 months in the last 2 years.

In order for your vehicle to be eligible to drive for Uber, it must be nine years or less from the current year’s changeover date—the 30th of June. According to Uber’s guidelines for Brisbane: All cars driving with Uber in Brisbane must be:

  • In excellent working condition
  • No older than the maximum age for the Uber vehicle option chosen
  • A 4-door car or passenger van
  • No more than 8-seats, including the driver’s seat
  • Able to pass a vehicle inspection
  • Registered and CTP-insured in Queensland
  • Free from cosmetic damage (e.g. scuff marks, scratches and indentations such as hail damage)
  • Free from commercial branding (e.g. graphics or wraps greater than 20cm by 20cm)
  • Other minimum rules apply to specific vehicle options

From October 1 2019, must have a 5 star ANCAP rating, or fall under Uber’s vehicle exemption policy. If your personal car is not eligible, you can always use a rental car in the interim or on a long-term basis.

If you are eligible, then you can create an Uber account and upload your supporting documents such as your driver’s licence, vehicle insurance and a valid profile photo.

Step 2: Apply for Driver’s Authorisation

The next step to becoming an authorised Uber partner in Brisbane is to hold a Queensland driver’s authorisation and Booked Hire Service Licence / Taxi (BHTX) Driver’s Authorisation (DA) for your vehicle from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will mail you your Driver Authorisation Card within a couple weeks of your application’s approval.

Step 3: Get a vehicle inspection and complete the online safety training

You must arrange a vehicle inspection in order to obtain a Certificate of Inspection and confirm that your vehicle is roadworthy. You will then be prompted to complete a 30-minute safety education module online.

Vehicle insurance is compulsory if you want to drive for Uber. Several points must be visible on the document you give to Uber: Comprehensive or Third-Party Property, your name, vehicle make and registration, policy expiration and type of cover.
